AOC Buzet
The nearest wine appellation, producing excellent reds, rosés, and whites from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc grapes. The cooperative Les Vignerons de Buzet offers tastings and tours of their cellars, with wines available to buy direct at very reasonable prices. A great introduction to the wines of southwest France.
Cahors
Famous worldwide for its deep, rich Malbec wines — the "black wine of Cahors" has been produced here since Roman times. The vineyards line the Lot Valley upstream, and many domaines welcome visitors for tastings. The town of Cahors itself is beautiful, with a medieval bridge and excellent restaurants.
Bergerac & Dordogne
The Bergerac appellation produces a wide range of wines from robust reds to sweet Monbazillac dessert wines. Many châteaux offer tastings in beautiful settings. Combine a wine tour with a visit to the charming old town of Bergerac on the Dordogne river.
Côtes de Duras
A smaller, less-known appellation producing excellent value wines. The vineyards sit on rolling hills between the Lot-et-Garonne and the Dordogne, and the small-scale producers are particularly welcoming to visitors. Great for discovering hidden gems.

The region is rich in medieval architecture. These châteaux make excellent day trips, and combine perfectly with a vineyard visit on the same outing.
Château de Bonaguil
One of the last great medieval castles built in France, dramatically perched on a rocky spur. Summer programming often includes family activities, historical demonstrations, and evening events. Excellent option for children who enjoy towers, walls, and dramatic viewpoints.
Château de Biron
A magnificent castle that combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture. The scale of the site makes it feel like a full destination day, and the surrounding villages are excellent for lunch and local produce shopping.
Château de Gavaudun
A dramatic ruined fortress overlooking the Lède Valley. Climb to the keep for panoramic views, then combine with nearby villages, local mini-golf spots, or a shorter family activity in the same afternoon.

Most vineyards offer free tastings (dégustation gratuite). It's polite to buy a bottle or two if you enjoy the wines. Larger cooperatives have set opening hours; smaller domaines may need a call ahead.
Designated Driver
Wine tasting and driving don't mix. Consider splitting driving duties within your group, or use the spittoons provided at tastings. French drink-driving limits are strict (0.5g/l).
Best Time
Vineyards are open year-round but are at their most atmospheric during harvest (September–October). Summer has the longest opening hours. Châteaux may have reduced hours outside July–August.
Buying Wine
Buying direct from the producer is excellent value. Many estates offer cases at discounted prices. Stock up the holiday house — you'll pay a fraction of UK wine-shop prices.
